Warringtonfire invests in calorimetry prediction software package

London, UK – September 08, 2020 – Independent fire-testing company Warringtonfire, which is part of the Element Group, is now offering a service to predict intermediate scale Single Burning Item (SBI) test results using the small scale Cone Calorimeter test.

Warringtonfire’s new capability follows a recent investment in a state of the art Cone Calorimeter and a predictive software package at its Warrington, UK laboratory, and is a response to the introduction of the European harmonised Reaction to Fire classification system.

In cases where the new classification system requires SBI testing, there can be a need to test medium scale specimens of up to 1500mm x 1000mm, but this can be impractical at the R&D stage because of production and shipping costs for that size; and because some specimens that scale can’t be manufactured during the R&D phase. Instead, Warringtonfire’s test and predictive software approach utilizes specimens measuring 100mm x 100mm and provides a method of predicting a FIGRA and THR result that can be compared to the classification parameters in EN 13501-1 for construction products, excluding floorings and linear pipe thermal insulation.

Rob Veitch, EVP of Fire & Building Products at Element, said: “This cost effective tool is based on extensive research by Warringtonfire’s engaged experts, with further work being conducted to validate the predictive tool using our test equipment.

“As we see European testing begin to take precedent over historical British Standard tests, this service provides our customers with an excellent way to predict likely performance without investing in manufacturing that could be expensive or difficult to produce specimens. This new package will allow our customers to perform extensive research programs, without compromising on product variations, to ensure that value engineering is maximized.”

Warringtonfire offers a comprehensive range of impartial and independent fire safety services that are a globally respected mark of quality assurance. From developing fire safety design strategies, through testing and certification of passive fire protection products, to inspection, commissioning and certification of completed projects, Warringtonfire can help with all aspects of fire safety.
